Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust: How We’re Improving Our Services for Hedgehogs in Need
As we celebrate Hedgehog Awareness Week, we want to share something important with our community: Northumbrian Hedgehog Rescue Trust has been quietly transforming the way we care for hedgehogs. We’ve strengthened our services, expanded our support systems, and improved the experience for both hedgehogs and the people who help them.
These changes haven’t happened overnight. They’ve grown from dedication, teamwork, and the incredible support of our volunteers, donors, and local community. Here’s how we’re making a bigger difference than ever:
- A growing volunteer team We’ve increased the number of volunteers helping on a daily basis, giving us more hands, more capacity, and more consistency in the care we provide.
- Stronger training and ongoing support New volunteers receive more thorough training, along with continued guidance and support after their initial induction, helping them feel confident and prepared.
- Easier ways to donate Supporters can now make online donations through both Facebook and our website, making it simpler than ever for people to contribute to hedgehog care.
- A more interactive and informative Facebook presence Our Facebook Page now shares more stories, progress updates, educational posts, and awareness messages – helping the public understand hedgehog welfare and follow the journeys of the hogs in our care.
- A thriving online community We’re proud to have reached 20,000 Facebook members, creating a strong, engaged community that helps spread awareness and support our work.
- Partnership with The Sage Group We’ve developed a brilliant partnership with The Sage Group, whose teams regularly visit to tackle big, essential jobs around the rescue – work that would be difficult for us to manage alone.
- Expanded public education and outreach We’ve increased our efforts to help people recognise when a hedgehog needs help, create hedgehog‑friendly gardens, and respond in emergencies. This includes delivering more talks to schools, WIs, and community groups across the region.
- A refreshed and regularly updated website Our website has been improved and now features regular, up‑to‑date articles, helping supporters stay informed about rescue news, seasonal advice, and hedgehog welfare information.
